Fundster Golfers Raise More Than $575K to Fight Cancer

Reported by Neil Anderson, Managing Editor

Last week fundsters raised more than $575,000 dollars for the fight against cancer, and they did it on the golf course.

On Thursday the Expect Miracles Foundation - Financial Services Against Cancer (formerly known as Mutual Funds Against Cancer) held its 21st annual East Coast Classic golf tournament, at the two courses at the Pinehills Golf Club in Plymouth, Massachusetts as per usual. Frank Heavey, executive director of the foundation, confirms that 280 golfers turned out for the tournament, which was the foundation's third major event in a row to sell out.

Since 2007 the foundation has donated more than $5 million to the Robert and Renee Belfer Center for Applied Cancer Science at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute. The $550,000-plus raised on Thursday, which Heavey says is up from previous years, will go to the Belfer Center.

"The industry's really done a great job supporting the mission," Heavey tells MFWire. "The increase is due to very active supporters that come from across all of the verticals within the industry."

The foundation has traditionally enjoyed strong support from mutual fund shops and their service providers, Heavey says, and now alternatives shops, ETF providers, independent broker-dealers, retirement plan providers, and wirehouses are increasing their involvement, too.

"The industry loves to network and to build relationships with their clients and colleagues," Heavey says. "We give them a platform to do that, for the purpose of fighting cancer."

The foundation actually began with the golf tournament in 1995, under founder (now chairman) Frank Strauss. Since then the foundation added an annual wine and spirits event (the 11th annual one sold out last fall; the 12th annual is scheduled for November 5 at the Revere Hotel in Boston) and a West Coast Classic golf tournament (the 7th annual is scheduled for October 22 at the Resort at Pelican Hill in Newport Beach, California). And this February the foundation held its inaugural Expect Miracles in Manhattan gala, which also sold out.
