Axel Merk founded Merk Investments in 1994 in Switzerland in 1994, but relocated the firm to Palo Alto, California in 2001. Currently the company's president and CEO, Merk is the author of the Sustainable Wealth: Achieve Financial Security in a Volatile World of Debt and Consumption. The consumer-oriented book outlines Merk's long-term, defensive investment strategy. Merk appears regularly in national print, online, and television media to discuss his take on the state of the national and global economy.
Sustainable Wealth grew out of Sustainablewealth.org, a Web site Merk founded to provide financial commentary and analysis. Several Merk employees contribute to the site, including Hanna Tikkanen Merk, executive vice president of Merk Investments and Axel Merk's wife. Other contributors include co-portfolio manager Kieran Osborne, senior analyst Hannes Maki-Uuro, and analyst Peter Battiste.
In September 2009, Merk hired Judy Haber for the newly-created position of director of marketing. Including Haber, the firm has 11 employees. In January 2010, Merk expanded further by hiring Aaron Leffingwell as its first ever wholesaler. Officially the vice president of sales, Leffingwell reports to Tikkanen Merk.
Merk Investments launched its first fund, the Hard Currency Fund, in May 2005. The firm currently offers two additional funds: the Absolute Return Currency Fund and the Asian Currency Fund. The firm also offers institutional shares. As the fund names suggest, the funds invest in various types of U.S. and foreign currencies.
The fund is a series of the Forum Fund.
