On April 15, 2011, Grail Advisors announced its sale to Columbia Management Investment Advisors for an undisclosed sum. The day before, a media report said a deal was imminent.
The firm was founded with seed capital from Grail Partners, a strategic consultant to the mutual fund industry, as a specialist in the exchange-traded fund market.
Grail launched the first actively-managed equity ETFs in January 2009.
After launching proprietary ETFs, Grail has embarked on a strategy of partnering with "strong" brands in the asset management world to ease their entry into the ETF space.
Its initial partner was Legg Mason's Western Asset Management. Grail has also branded ETFs with: American Beacon, McDonnell Investment Management and RiverPark Capital.
In June of 2010, Grail formed its second partnership with Jeff Gundlach's DoubleLine Capital.
