At the end of Q1 2021, alternative investment manager Hamilton Lane acquired 361 Capital.
361 Capital is a manager of alternative investment portfolios. With their suite of products, the 361 team aims to offer investors alpha, diversification, and risk management.
CEO Tom Florence prefers the quant approach of asset management, avoiding the star PM model as much as possible. He is also a fan of the hybrid sales model, hiring talent with moderate experience and then ferociously training them.
HistoryBrian Cunningham founded Trail Ridge Capital in 2001. The firm initially focused on managing alternatives products for the high net worth market.
Veteran mutual fund industry executive Florence became an investor in the advisor in 2009. In 2010 the firm rebranded as 361 Capital and refocused its business on the advisor and institutional market through '40 Act funds. The 361 team launched their first mutual fund — the 361 Absolute Alpha Fund — on December 31, 2010.
In March of 2012 Lighthouse Partners acquired a minority stake in 361 Capital in a strategic partnership. Then in June of 2014, Lovell Minnick Partners bought a minority stake in 361.
In 2016, 361 made its first acquisition, buying a nearby quant shop, BRC Investment Management, that focuses on equities.
