On December 17, 2015, Whitebox closed its three mutual funds to new investment. Whitebox will liquidate the funds on January 19, 2016, exiting the mutual fund business while refocusing exclusively on its hedge fund business.
Andrew Redleaf founded hedge fund shop Whitebox Advisors in 2000. The Minneapolis-based firm debuted its first mutual fund 2004 and hired a mutual fund distribution chief in 2013.
The Whitebox folks pitch their firm as "security and asset-class agnostic." They invest in stocks (both foreign and domestic) and bonds, as well as derivatives. They aim "to construct positions with limited risks and asymmetric upside potential."
The firm's culture is built around three pillars: a "principle-based investment process"; a "long-tenured, collaborative team"; and a "'radical conservative' asset allocation" based on "never accepting a risk without an asymmetric potential reward."
