Manager-of-managers American Beacon Advisors is a subsidiary of Resolute Investment Managers, a private equity-backed, multi-affiliate investment management parent company. American Beacon's focus, as a former chief put it, is on finding "under-appreciated, under-distributed investment excellence."
American Beacon was born as AMR Investments in November 1986, as a unit of American Airlines parent AMR Corp. Their success in managing the operating funds of AMR Corp.'s treasury department resulted in the formation of AMR Investments, originally led by Bill Quinn. AMR Investments' no-load mutual fund family, originally called the American AAdvantange Funds, was born in July 1987.
AMR Investments rebranded to American Beacon Advisors in 2005, and the mutual fund family became known as the American Beacon Funds. American Beacon Advisors is a manager-of-managers that hires and fires other managers for its subadvised mutual fund family.
In January 2008, Quinn stepped down as American Beacon's president and CEO but stayed on as chairman, passing the reins to Gene Needles. In September 2008, AMR. Corp sold American Beacon to Lighthouse Holdings for $480 million. Lighthouse, in turn, was owned by investment funds affiliated with Pharos Capital Group, LLC and TPG Capital.
Private equity firms Kelso & Company and Estancia Capital Management bought American Beacon from Lighthouse in April 2015, and the rumored price tag on the deal was $600 million or more. American Beacon's new holding company, Astro AB Borrowers, eventually rebranded as Resolute in April 2017. In 2022, Jeff Ringdahl succeeded Needles as CEO of both Resolute and American Beacon.
Though Resolute previously owned minority stakes in several boutiques and continues to be a distribution ally to one of them (Ark), the firm's focus is now on long-term, majority ownership of, and support of, boutique active asset managers. Currently, Resolute owns majority stakes in six boutiques: American Beacon, Continuous Capital (which is winding down), National Investment Services, RSW Investments, Shapiro Capital Management, and SSI Investment Management.
