BlackStone Group employees Larry Fink, Ralph Schlosstein, Robert Kapito and Sue Wagner founded BlackStone Financial Management in 1988. Fink headed the spinout of the unit from the private equity manager in 1992.
While primarily a fixed-income specialist for its first 15 years, BlackRock expanded its expertise with the purchase of State Street Research & Management from MetLife in 2004.
In 2006, BlackRock purchased Merrill Lynch Investment Managers (MLIM) in exchange for Merrill Lynch receiving a stake in BlackRock. This cut in half PNC's ownership in the BlackRock.
In June of 2008, BlackRock announced an agreement to purchase Barclays Global Investors from Barclays PLC. That deal included Barclays' iShares family of exchange-traded funds. BGI was integrated with BlackRock's investment management business, but, at the time, iShares remained a separate unit. In October 2012, the asset giant combined the sales organizations of BlackRock and iShares together.
As of December 28, 2016, iShares was the largest ETF provider in the world, with close to 800 funds listed globally and more than $983.1 billion in assets under management.
As of September 30, 2016, BlackRock managed $5.1 trillion in assets, and had approximately 13,000 employees in more than 30 countries.
