  • Background:
Chicago-based RMB Capital entered the mutual fund business when it took over the three Burnham Funds on an interim basis on July 1, 2016 and rebranded them as the RMB Funds. An upcoming fund shareholder vote, scheduled for September 15, 2016, could make RMB the funds' new advisor on a permanent basis.

RMB Capital was founded in 2005. Led by founding partner Richard M. "Dick" Burridge (also CEO and CIO), the independent, employee-owned firm has three main business lines: retirement planning solutions, wealth management, and asset management. On the asset management side, in addition to three mutual funds, RMB has a hedge fund platform providing back-office, compliance, and more services for four hedge funds. One of those hedge funds is Mendon Capital, and Mendon also subadvises two of RMB's mutual funds. (The third RMB mutual fund is PMed in-house.)

Historically, RMB's asset management distribution was primarily through its own wealth management arm. Yet since 2014 Krista Rivers has been spearheading a broadening of that distribution in institutional channels: endowments, family offices, foundations, and other sophisticated RIAs. Meanwhile, the mutual funds have mostly been distributed through intermediaries.

As of July 2016, RMB has 120 employees working with $5.2 billion across its three business lines. That includes about $660 million in the mutual funds and $1.6 billion in other AUM.

Prior to July 1, 2016, the Burnham Funds were advised by New York City-based Burnham Asset Management (BAM). BAM was part of the Burnham Financial Group (which traces its roots back to 1931), and BAM was later wholly owned by BAM Holdings, which is controlled by Devon Archer and Kirin Global Enterprises. Following federal civil and criminal charges filed in May 2016 against Archer and six other defendants, the Burnham Funds board voted replace BAM with RMB as investment advisor to the Burnham Funds on an interim basis, pending the results of the upcoming shareholder vote.
