  • Background:
Founded in 1980 by John Hotchkis and George Wiley, Hotchkis and Wiley Capital Management is based in Los Angeles. Today, the firm offers five equity value funds and one fixed income fund. Hotchkis and Wiley is independently owned with a majority interest held by employees.

CEO, portfolio manager and principal George Davis, Jr. has been with the firm since 1988 and assumed his current executive roles in 2001. Davis is also director of Hotchkis and Wiley (UK) Limited. Portfolio manager and principal David Green joined Hotchkis and Wiley in 1997 and became a principal in 2001. Sheldon Lieberman and Patricia McKenna are also principals with the firm.

In 1996, Merrill Lynch acquired Hotchkis and Wiley in the hopes of expanding its investment management business. But the relationship went sour in just five years: Merrill dropped the firm in 2001. Key managers at Hotchkis and Wiley led a management buyout from Merrill and recreated the company. Hotchkis and Wiley soon used its newfound freedom to embark on an expansion of its high-yield fund business, including hiring former Merrill sales manager Bob Dochterman as national sales manager. The firm also rebranded its funds to Hotchkis and Wiley from Mercury HW, a name that reflected its former relationship with Merrill subsidiary Mercury Asset Management.
