  • Background:
On September 9, 2015, Catalyst Funds [profile] revealed plans to buy Huntington Asset Advisors while Federated Investors [profile] revealed plans to buy Huntington's money market mutual fund business. As part of the Catalyst deal, slated to close in December 2015, Catalyst will take over five Huntington mutual funds, two variable annuities, and two ETFs. And for the Federated deal, slated to close in Q4 2015, two Huntington money funds will be reorganized into Federated ones.

Columbus, Ohio-based Huntington Asset Advisors and its associates have been managing money since 1917. A wholly owned subsidiary of Huntington National Bank, HAA manages more than $13.5 billion as of December 31, 2011.

Huntington Funds traces its roots to the launch of the first Monitor fund, the Monitor Money Market Fund, in June 1987. Monitor launched 10 more funds over the next decade, before becoming Huntington Funds in November 1999.

Randy Bateman, president of Huntington Asset Advisors (the advisor to the Huntington Funds) and executive vice president and chief investment officer of the bank, first joined the firm in 2000. Huntington continued to launch funds, now counting 24 (12 equity, five fixed income, four money market and three asset allocation) funds under its umbrella, as of April 2011. It boasted nearly $14.5 billion in assets as of December 31, 2010. (See Huntington's own timeline here.)

More recently, Huntington revamped its fee schedule in June 2010, offering new breakpoints according to investors' total load-based mutual fund assets, including both Huntington Funds and non-Huntington Funds assets. Also in June 2010, Huntington revealed plans to launch two active ETFs, now slated for release in July 2011.

Huntington Funds also has a back-office sibling, Huntington Asset Services (formerly Unified Fund Services, founded in 1952), which the bank took over in 2006 [see website]. The Indianapolis-based mutual fund service solutions firm works with more than $45 billion and offers fund firms a number of services, including fund accounting, administration, compliance, custody, distribution and transfer agency. Huntington re-branded the back office unit in August 2010, after anointing Brian Blomquist as the new Unified Fund Services chief in February of the same year.
