On February 25, 2026, New York Life consolidated its three main asset management arms and brands under one roof: New York Life Investment Management.
In August 2024, New York Life Investments consolidated its retail offerings under a single, new brand: NYLI Funds. That new brand replaced New York Life Investments' existing MainStay Mutual Funds and IndexIQ ETFs brands.
NYLIM is the asset management arm of New York Life Insurance Company, a mutually owned insurer that traces its roots back to the launch of the Nautilus Insurance Co. in 1845. (Nautilus rebranded as New York Life in 1849.)
New York Life's asset management push goes back at least to 1980, when the firm debuted its first GIC. In 1984, New York Life bought MacKay Shields, and in 1986 New York Life entered the mutual fund space with its new MainStay Funds brand. New York Life Investment Management LLC (NYLIM) debuted in 2000.
In 2012, New York Life adopted Marketfield Asset Management's flagship Marketfield Fund. In 2015, New York Life entered the ETF space by buying nearby IndexIQ Advisors, a liquid alternative shop.
