Albert Owen "Ab" Nicholas founded Nicholas Company in 1967, after working with Northwest Insurance Company and M&I Bank. He debuted his flagship Nicholas Fund in 1969, with a minimum investment of $500 (which remains unchanged as of 2016).
By 2016, the independent, Milwaukee, Wisconsin-based mutual fund shop had six strategies and $6.1 billion in AUM.
Nicholas, a former college basketball star who after graduating chose the Army over the NBA, famously eschewed advertising his fund firm, preferring to let their performance speak for itself. His eponymous fund firm takes a long-term, fundamental, growth-oriented approach.
Nicholas led his firm and co-PMed his flagship fund up until his death on August 4, 2016 at the age of 85. Nicholas' son, president and CIO David O. Nicholas, succeeded his father as CEO.
