Perkins Capital Management was founded in 1984 by Richard W. Perkins after a stint at Piper, Jaffray & Hopwood, Inc. where he was instrumental in establishing the firm's International Department.
Perkins currently co-manages the Discovery Fund with his son, Richard C. Perkins. The fund, which is an aggressive growth vehicle, follows a bottom-up approach, using both fundamental and technical chart analysis to find new investments. It managed
$12.7 million as of September 30, 2011 and will close to new investors at the $100 million mark.
During the six-month period ended September 30, 2011, the Fund finished down -25.42 percent versus -25.13 percent for the Dow Jones Wilshire Micro-Cap Index, -23.12 percent for the Russell 2000 Index, -13.15 percent for the NASDAQ Composite and -13.78 percent for the S&P 500 Index. Micro-cap stocks were among the hardest hit during the period, according to the firm.
