  • Background:
State Street Global Advisors (SSgA) is the investment management arm of State Street Bank and Trust Company, a wholly owned subsidiary of State Street Corporation. SSgA existed as an investment division of State Street Bank since 1978 but it was not until 1990 that SSgA became a separate entity from the bank.

In 1993, SSgA launched the first ETF, the SPDR S&P 500.

In January 2008, SSgA's CEO of three years, Bill Hunt, resigned amid lawsuits lodged by fund investors against the firm over losses in some of its bond funds. In April 2008, Scott Powers, previously with Old Mutual, took over as president and CEO.
