Brothers Bob and Mark Turner and Christopher McHugh founded Berwyn, Pennsylvania-based Turner Investment Partners in 1990. Turner is an independent firm and has consistently added new employee owners throughout the past decade.
Today, Bob Turner serves as chairman, CIO and principal for the funds, as well as lead portfolio manager for Turner's large cap growth and global growth strategies and the Turner Market Neutral strategy. He developed the equity investment process that undergirds all Turner growth equity strategies.
Mark Turner is president of the firm, and serves as lead portfolio manager for the International Growth ADR and International Growth strategies, and as co-manager for Turner's large cap growth, global growth, and global financial services strategy.
Christopher McHugh is now vice president of Turner, lead portfolio manager for three funds, and co-portfolio manager for two funds.
Turner offers 25 funds spanning the long/short equity, international equity, U.S. growth equity, core & value equity, and quantitative equity asset allocation classes. Besides offering its own funds, the firm has a substantial subadvisory business that it has been growing since the early 2000's.
The firm took a hit in the financial crisis of 2008, laying off 22 employees from the distribution and business services teams in October of that year. The cuts were implemented less than a week after Turner withdrew its SEC registration statement for an IPO.
More recently, however, Turner seems to be on the rebound as it rebuilds and expands its distribution team. In August 2009, the firm hired four external and three internal wholesalers, all for newly-created posts. In October of that year, Turner hired another five wholesalers in a second wave of expansion to its private client group. And in November, Turner's private client group managing director Gary Ross said the firm would add another 17 to 25 wholesalers over the next 12 to 18 months.
Ross and 10 other employees became principals at Turner in January 2010.
