Based in San Antonio, Texas, U.S. Global Investors was founded as an investment club in the early 1960s. The firm became a registered investment advisor in 1969 under the name Military Services Investments Advisors, Inc. The name soon changed to Growth and Research Management, Inc. U.S. Global Investors assumed its current name in June 1996, and now manages 13 no-load mutual funds specializing in gold, natural resources, emerging markets and global infrastructure opportunities.
CEO and CIO Frank Holmes has led the company since 1989, when he purchased a controlling interest in USGI. He assumed his CIO duties in 2001 -- the first person in the firm to hold that title. USGI launched its first mutual fund, the Gold Shares Fund, in 1974 as the nation's first no-load precious metals fund. The firm really began expanding its mutual fund offerings after Holmes took the reins. The firm opened the China Region Fund in 1994, the Easter European Fund in 1997, and the Global Emerging Markets Fund in 2005. In December 2006, Mining Journal Magazine named Holmes "Mining Fund Manager of the Year" based on the 2006 performance of the funds he managed.
In March 2010, the firm added an institutional shares to three of its funds, the World Precious Minerals Fund, the Global Resources Fund, and the Global Megatrends Fund.
Susan McGee joined USGI as associate counsel in 1992, and now serves as the firm's president and general counsel.
