John Dorfman founded Thunderstorm Capital in August 1999. He launched the
Thunderstorm Value Fund in December 2007. Initially named the Dorfman Value Fund, the fund was rebranded as Thunderstorm Value effective June 30, 2009.
The rebranding was intended to promote a more coherent marketing message is to rebrand all of its products to begin with the word “Thunderstorm”.
Before he became a money manager at Dremen Value Management at age 50, John Dorfman was a financial journalist who wrote for Forbes (1982-1984) and Consumer Reports (1984-1986). From 1986 through 1997 he was a Senior Special Writer for The Wall Street Journal where he was among the team authoring the "Heard on the Street" stock-market column.
In January 2012, Thunderstorm Capital announced its plan to liquidate the mutual fund. The liquidation was scheduled to take place February 29.
