On February 13, 2018, Mirae Asset unveiled a deal to buy 100 percent of Global X, a fast-growing ETF shop based in New York City.
Seoul-based Mirae Asset Global Investments Co., Ltd., founded in 1997, is the asset management arm of Mirae Asset Financial Group, a multinational Korean financial services giant that is also in the brokerage, investment banking, and life insurance businesses. Mirae Asset entered the U.S. mutual fund market in September 2010. Mirae's team focuses on emerging market equity and fixed income portfolios that are actively managed.
In April 2012 Mirae Asset's Canadian ETF business, Horizons, entered the ETF market stateside by subadvising new ETFs from Exchange Traded Concepts (ETC). In November 2016, Horizons' New York-based U.S. arm unveiled a deal to buy a stateside ETF business, Recon Capital Advisors, from Stamford, Connecticut-based Recon Capital Partners. Mirae Asset also has ETF units in Australia (BetaShares) and Asia (Tiger ETF).
