7Twelve takes it name and investing strategy from the mind of Brigham Young University associate professor Craig Israelsen. Israelsen created the 7Twelve model, which divides assets into seven basic categories. From those categories Israelsen further divides assets into twelve sub-categories -- U.S. large cap stocks, U.S. mid-cap stocks, U.S. small-cap stocks, non-U.S. developed markets equities, emerging market equities, real estate, natural resources, other commodities, U.S. aggregate bonds, TIPS, international bonds and U.S. money markets -- and then divides the pool equally between indexes of each of the twelve sub-categories.
For several years prior to the launch of 7Twelve Advisors' first mutual fund in April 2011, Israelsen sent out a newsletter on this strategy, reaching about 300 advisors across the country. Then Andrew Martin decided to turn Israelsen's strategy into a mutual fund. Martin leads the RIA and serves as the fund's PM, while Israelsen serves as CIO.
