In November 2021, the Ark team moved their headquarters from New York City (the firm's original hometown) to St. Petersburg.
"Disruptive innovation" is the name of the investing game at ARK Investments, actively-managed exchange traded funds are the investing vehicle of choice, and transparency is the modus operandi.
After a PM career at Jennison Associates (now part of Prudential Investments), hedge fund shop Tupelo Capital Management (which she co-founded) and AllianceBernstein (where she served as CIO for thematic portfolios), Cathie Wood launched ARK in 2014. The new mutual fund shop debuted its first two ETFs, each around a different theme, in September 2014.
Wood and her team embrace the tax efficiency and transparency of the ETF structure, making their investing process public and involving academics as "theme developers."
A subadvised, multi-manager fund firm, American Beacon, bought a minority stake in Ark in 2016, with an option to increase its stake down the line. In 2020, Ark and Wood did a deal to extinguish American Beacon's option, keeping Wood as the majority shareholder of Ark. American Beacon's parent, Resolute Investment Managers, remains a minority shareholder in Ark and a key Ark ally (mainly in distribution.)
