Horizon is a self-described "goals-based investment manager" that supports financial advisors. The Charlotte, North Carolina-based firm's team offers a number of mutual funds (the oldest debuted in 2011) and ETFs (starting in 2025).
Robbie Cannon founded Horizon Investments in 1995 as a quantitative RIA. Over time, the quant shop became an ETF strategist, building portfolios out of ETFs (though they also use other underlying investment building blocks). Cannon stepped back in 2021 when a private equity firm, Altamont Capital Partners, invested in Horizon Investments, becoming its majority owner.
The Horizon folks describe the firm as being guided by five core values: community, fun, gratitude, ingenuity, and unity. And they frame the "investment journey" as going through three stages: accumulate, preserve, and distribute.
