News summary by MFWire's editors

Nine of the richest Americans are fundsters, or fundster-adjacent, according to a new list from a business magazine.

Abigail "Abby" Pierrepont Johnson
FMR (dba Fidelity Investments)
Chair, President, CEO
Yesterday, Rob LaFranco, assistant managing editor at Forbes, and Chase Peterson-Withorn, senior editor for wealth, unveiled the publication's 2023 edition of the Forbes 400. This is the 42nd edition of the flagship list, which is a list of the 400 wealthiest people in the U.S. (Those 400 are collectively worth $4.5 trillion, up $500 billion from the 2022 list, with the minimum net worth to make the list now at $2.9 billion.) The figures on the list are as of September 8.

Abby Johnson, the 61-year-old chair and CEO of Fidelity Investments, is the top mutual fund industry leader on the list, with a net worth of $25.5 billion. Her siblings Edward Johnson IV (58) and Elizabeth Johnson (60) are next, with $10.6 billion and $8.7 billion each, respectively.

Other fundsters (or fundster-adjacent folks) on this year's list include:
  • Mark Walter (63), CEO of Guggenheim Partners, $5.7 billion;
  • Joe Mansueto (67), executive chairman of Morningstar, $5.6 billion;
  • Ron Baron (80), CEO of Baron Funds;
  • Charles Johnson (90), former chairman of Franklin Templeton, $5.1 billion;
  • Rupert Johnson, Jr. (83), vice chairman of Franklin, $4.2 billion; and
  • Rajiv Jain (55), founder, chairman, and chief investment officer of GQG Partners, $3.1 billion.
