With low-volatility ETFs all the rage among providers, MarketWatch commentator John Prestbo is asking if these funds are really good investments for consumers.

His answer? As usual, it depends on timing.

In a column that specifically mentions products from PowerShares [profile], iShares [profile] and SSgA [profile], Prestbo notes that whether or not low-vol ETFs beat the market is based largely on how the market does for a particular year.
