Week In Preview, October 15-21

Today the Money Management Institute (MMI) team will kick off their 2018 MMI Annual Conference. The three-day event is being held at the Hyatt Regency in Dallas and is co-chaired by Keith Glenfield, managing director and head of investment products at Bank of America Merrill Lynch, and Cheryl Nash, president of investment services at Fiserv. Featured speakers will include: author John O'Leary; Christian Mitchell, vice president of investment products and services and president and CEO of Northwestern Mutual Wealth Management Company; Joe Sullivan, chairman and CEO of Legg Mason; John Taft, vice chairman of Baird; and three members of the 2018 Olympic gold-winning U.S. women's hockey team — Hannah Brandt, Nicole Hensley, and Kendall Coyne Schofield. The opening reception tonight will be held at the George W. Bush Presidential Library and Museum, and tomorrow night the conference will host the 2018 MMI/Barron's Industry Awards Dinner. Conference sponsors include: Allego; Apex Clearing; Archer; BNY Mellon; Cerulli Associates; CGI; Charles River; Copytalk; Envestnet; Fiserv; and Vestmark.

Also today, the Independent Directors Council (IDC) team will kick off its 2018 Fund Directors Conference. The three-day event is being held at the Fairmont Chicago Millennium Park and will feature remarks from retired U.S. Navy Admiral James Stavridis (former NATO Supreme Allied Commander and current independent director for the Neuberger Berman Funds) and Dalia Blass, director of the SEC's division of investment management.

Also today, the FA magazine team is kicking off their ETF Strategy Summit. Like the MMI conference, the FA summit is being held at the Hyatt Regency in Dallas. The two-day conference is being chaired by Debbie Fuhr, managing partner and co-founder of ETFGI. John Mauldin, chairman of Mauldin Economics, and Lex Sokolin, partner and global director of fintech strategy at Autonomous Research, are scheduled to appear as keynote speakers. The conference is being sponsored by American Century, Amplify ETFs, Barron's, BlueStar Indexes, Davis, Transamerica's DeltaShares ETF.com, ETFGI, Exponential ETFs, Fidelity, FTSE Russell, Global X, GraniteShares, Hartford Funds, New York Life's IndexIQ, InfraCap, Janus Henderson, Natixis, OppenheimerFunds, Robo Global, TrimTabs, the Wall Street Journal, and XTF.

Also today, the team at the National Association of Personal Financial Advisors (NAPFA) is kicking off their NAPFA Fall 2018 National Conference. The four-day event is being held at the Philadelphia 201 Hotel and will feature keynote speeches from: Jennifer Golbeck, director of the human-computer interaction lab at the University of Maaryland; LaVaughn Henry, banking and regulatory policy analyst at the FDIC; George Kinder, founder of the Kinder Institute of Life Planning; and Eric Rosenbach, former chief of staff to the U.S. Secretary of Defense and former U.S. Army intelligence officer. The conference is being sponsored by Buckingham Strategic Wealth, DFA, DPL, Griffin Capital Securities, Lincoln Financial, LLIS, Longbridge Financial, SEI, TrustCorp America, TD Ameritrade Institutional, and TIAA.

Tomorrow morning, before trading opens on the NYSE, the BlackRock team will release their Q3 2018 earnings results. Chairman and CEO Larry Fink, president Rob Kapito, and chief financial officer Gary Shedlin will host their Q3 earnings call at 8:30am.

On Wednesday, the team at High Water Women will host their Investing for Impact Symposium at the CUNY Graduate Center in New York City. Andrea Jung, president and CEO of Grameen America, will deliver the keynote address. The conference is being sponsored by Glenmede, Impax Asset Management, J.P. Morgan Chase, Nuveen, Treehouse Investments, and a host of other companies.

Also on Wednesday, the Riskalyze team will kick off their second annual Fearless Investing Summit. More than 550 FAs and their allies are expected to attend the three-day conference, which will be held at the San Antonio Marriott Rivercenter. Keynote speakers scheduled to appear include: Jim Bowen, CEO of First Trust Advisors and First Trust Portfolios; Josh Brown, CEO of Ritholtz Wealth Management; Megan Carpenter, co-founder and CEO of FiComm Partners; Anthony Scaramucci, hedge fundster and former Trump advisor and White House communications director; and Dick Vitale, hall of fame sportscaster.

Also on Wednesday, the Eaton Vance team will host their annual investment perspectives media luncheon at the Modern Restaurant in New York City. Titled "Advanced Investing in Uncertain Times: Is the Party Over?", the discussion will be moderated by Bob Cunha, managing director of marketing and distribution strategy at Eaton Vance. Panelists will include: Richard Bernstein, CEO and chief investment officer of Richard Bernstein Advisors; Kathleen Gaffney, direcot of diversified fixed income at Eaton Vance; and Jade Huang, ESG senior equity analyst at Calvert.

Also on Wednesday, the Robo Global team will host a five-year anniversary celebration at the NYSE, featuring: Henrik Christensen, professor of UC San Diego; Raffaello D'Andrea, co-founder of Kiva Systems; Wyatt Neman, professor at Case Western Reserve; and Daniela Rus, professor and director of MIT's CSAIL. As part of the celebration, a UR5e robot arm (a collaborative robot, i.e. a "cobot") from Universal Robots will ring the NYSE's closing bell.

Also on Wednesday, the Investment Company Institute (ICI) team will host their fall media reception after work at Legg Mason's offices in New York City.

On Thursday evening, the Fixed Income Analysts Society, Inc. (FIASI) team will continue their monthly speaker series with an introduction to BlackRock's Aladdin platform. The event will be held at BlackRock's offices in New York City and will feature remarks from: Timothy Garbien, director and member of BlackRock Solutions' Aladdin business development team; Hai Shan, member of BlackRock's financial modeling group; and Chris Sturhan, director and member of BlackRock Solutions' analytics and quantitative solutions team.

On Friday, the Financial Planning Association (FPA) team will their kick off their FPA Residency Program October 2018. The three-day, sold-out event will be held at the Hilton Denver Inverness in Englewood, Colorado. Kyra Morris of Morris Financial Concepts will be the dean of the event, which is geared toward new CFPs or soon-to-be CFPs.

On Saturday afternoon the Merk and Morgan Creek teams will host an investment seminar in Morgan Creek's hometown of Chapel Hill, North Carolina. Axel Merk, president and CIO of his eponymous firm, and Mark Yusko, CEO and CIO of Morgan Creek, will lead the discussion. Then on Sunday the Merk and Morgan Creek teams and their event guests will join in the Bull City Race Fest in Durham.
